Bar Bending Works

For continuous beams, it is a little different. It is possible for the top of the beam to be compressed along a section of its length and taut along another section. That’s because a continuous beam is supported by more than two points.

As a result, the beam DOES NOT bend in one direction, but in reverse as it travels over intermediate supports.

Engineers design the bends of reinforcing steel in such a way that the steel sets into the concrete just where the tensile stresses occur to help the concrete resist these stresses. It is for this reason that some reinforcing rods are bent almost in a zigzag pattern.

Several of the important ways to increase and maintain bond strength include joining each bar with the next, anchoring the bar ends with concrete, and overlapping two bar ends.

Bar bending schedule provides the reinforcement calculation for reinforced concrete beam. It provides details of reinforcement cutting length, type of bends and bend length.
We will take one example for reinforcement quantity calculations for a concrete beam.
Example of RCC Beam Reinforcement Calculation:
Consider a beam of clear length of 4m, 300mm wide by 450mm depth. It consists of 2-12 diameter bars at top, and 2-16 diameter and 1 – 12 diameter bars at the bottom. Diameter of stirrup is 8mm spaced at 180mm center to center. Clear cover to reinforcement provided is 40mm.

Benefits of bar bending works

Steel bars should cut and bend to the required shape at the bar bending plant located in site. Initially the required bar schedule prepared according to the reinforcement drawings by the structural Engineers is been provided. The bar-benders then they were provided bars with necessary size and will be bent according to the required shape and length. Then they will be placed as in the drawings.

  • Bar bending also avoids the wastage of steel reinforcement (5 to 10%) and thus saves project cost.
  • It allows easy and fast preparation of bills of construction works for customers and contractors
  • It provides standards for quantity and quality requirements for reinforcement and concrete works.
